Projects

Throughout my graduate school career, I have worked on several interfaces as a designer, consultant, or researcher. While a number of these projects were in a classroom setting and never released to the public, several of them are intended to be public, at least eventually.

Cyclopath

I am one of five Ph.D. students working on the Cyclopath Geowiki. Currently we are working on redesigning the site so that it is faster and easier to use. This is in advance of the bike mapping software being available for the entire state of Minnesota. (Currently it is only for the Twin Cities region.)

On this project I am assisting on the design, but primarily as a consultant. My main role has been creating personas and helping bring those to life. As the project continues, I will also be doing user interviews.

The personas are based on a survey that was sent to all registered Cyclopath users and completed by about 380 users. We used Weka and the em clustering to create general clusters and then I finished the personas by making some tweaks and adding in some background information. Because this work was done for a live website, I am most comfortable putting the personas behind password protection, but please email me for access. katie@panciera.net In addition, I have posted the survey that I created as a part of my research on user motivation and activity. A subset of this survey was used to create the persona clusters.

The current website is publicly available at www.cyclopath.org.

Plymouth Congregational Church

I was recently recruited to the Technology Committee of my church and as we determined our focus, it was clear that a web page reorganization and redesign was the first thing we needed to address. As the only usability expert and one of only two technology vetrans on the committee, I have been working at bringing ideas to the table. Again, this project is somewhat private currently, but behind the password wall, you will find pngs of designs I've been working on. In addition, there are some sketches and some comments on the process. For accesss, please email me at katie@panciera.net I've posted all this information in chronological order, so you can see how the designs are changing. I bring designs to all the meetings, even though the focus has been on gathering research about existing sites. As the other committee members aren't familiar with the traditional process, I want them to be able to see what is possible in order to expand their thinking and focus on the important issues.

The existing site is publicly available at www.plymouth.org.

Active Prevention

Active Prevention was created as part of a course on online public health interventions. My group chose to address the issue of gestational diabetes and the eleveated risk of Type 2 diabetes women who have had gestational diabetes face. On this project, I was the sole technology expert, so I focused on creating the CSS and HTML while others worked on crafting the message. However, as I was also the only usability expert, I assisted the others in learning about usability methods and applying them to our site.
